In their own words: The guys share their thoughts on why now.

MIKE

"During our last tour, and while making Collapse Into Now and putting together this greatest hits retrospective, we started asking ourselves, 'what next'? Working through our music and memories from over three decades was a hell of a journey. We realized that these songs seemed to draw a natural line under the last 31 years of our working together.

"We have always been a band in the truest sense of the word. Brothers who truly love, and respect, each other. We feel kind of like pioneers in this--there's no disharmony here, no falling-outs, no lawyers squaring-off. We've made this decision together, amicably and with each other's best interests at heart. The time just feels right."

MICHAEL

"A wise man once said--'the skill in attending a party is knowing when it's time to leave. We built something extraordinary together. We did this thing. And now we're going to walk away from it.

"I hope our fans realize this wasn't an easy decision; but all things must end, and we wanted to do it right, to do it our way.

"We have to thank all the people who helped us be R.E.M. for these 31 years; our deepest gratitude to those who allowed us to do this. It's been amazing."

"One of the things that was always so great about being in R.E.M. was the fact that the records and the songs we wrote meant as much to our fans as they did to us. It was, and still is, important to us to do right by you. Being a part of your lives has been an unbelievable gift. Thank you.

I know I will be seeing them in the future, just as I know I will be seeing everyone who has followed us and supported us through the years. Even if it's only in the vinyl aisle of your local record store, or standing at the back of the club: watching a group of 19 year olds trying to change the world."

De verdad que tenía esperanzas de poder verles cuando vinieran de gira con el disco nuevo.

Dentro de que no les he escuchado todo lo bien que se merecen, que vendría a ser saberse de memoria el 75% de su material (vamos, que no tengo estudiados todos sus discos de los 80), pienso en todo lo que les he tenido presentes en momentos muy distintos de mi vida y me da un apena terrible. Pienso en grupos norteamericanos que hayan estado a su altura en los últimos 30 años y no me salen más de 7 u 8, y eso abriendo la mano...

Esta es una de mis favoritas desde siempre.

Una pena sobre todo porque desaparece la oportunidad de volverles a ver en directo, varios de sus discos les machaqué en el walkman, pero sinceramente los últimos discos no me decían nada.

Nos vamos haciendo mayores y van desapareciendo grupos que nos han marcado. Como dice una canción de lagartija nick

a olvidarte en ninguna parte,
donde todas las bandas que amaste
ya se han disuelto"

Yo espero que dentro de 8 o 10 años los podamos ver...

Yo que siempre hecho pestes de grupos grandes y los estadios y tal, creo que se simplifica la cosa si a los grandes se los compara con REM, los otros siempre quedan en evidencia

Yo espero que dentro de 8 o 10 años los podamos ver...

Sí, una gira de reunificación del grupo.

Dependerá de cuándo se quede sin pasta el más desgraciado del grupo.

Yo espero que por dignidad y coherencia no vuelvan. Por pasta no será, tienen royalties para parar un tren. Como mucho en plan Pink Floyd para algo benéfico super gordo. Por lo demás, hoy estoy con una bajuna extraña por esto. Me enteré anoche pero lo he empezado a asimilar esta mañana, un poco lo que dice Caneda, la pila de canciones jodidamente maravillosas que tienen y los momentos que han acompañado. Pocas bandas me han llegado tantísimo. Han sido enormes y por suerte pude verlos en directo hace unos años. Voy a tocarme unos temas aquí en casa, qué cojones.

Coincido y me identifico con todo lo que dices.
Los grupos ahora no es que sean peores que antes (es más la cosecha de este año y los pasados está resultando ser excelente), lo que pasa es que nuestra edad ya no es la de antes.

Les vi hace once o doce años en un festi de un día en el Estadio de la Peineta en Madrid que se llamó 'Gutierrez Festival', junto a Hole, Placebo, Sexy Sadie y Manta Ray .
